Third Lesson: Sharing the Stories of Ferrara’s Jewish Women

On October 23rd, 2025, the third lesson of the project pathway called “Le Case di Micòl” took place. The core of the lesson was the presentation of the assignments given by Professor Ronchi Stefanati: students were asked to present the biographies of Jewish women from Ferrara who were victims of systematic discrimination and deportation because of their faith or ethnic origin — different from that of the Fascist and Nazi regime — in other words, the story of a young woman like “Micòl.”

The students, working in pairs, shared the results of their research.

The first duo, composed of Giulia Fogli and Elizabeth Lanchipa, told the story of Clara Dragoni (Deportee no. 77344). Born in Alfonsine on May 5th, 1923 and living in Argenta, her ordeal included imprisonment in the Bologna jail, transfer through the Bolzano camp, and subsequent deportation to the Ravensbrück and Flossenbürg лагер. Her figure, who survived the horror, was highlighted for her role as a fighter and partisan, a symbol of the defense of fundamental rights. The students also provided a detailed explanation of the prisoner identification system (labeling) and clarified the deeper meaning of the Shoah, stressing the moral duty to honor the memory of those who suffered such persecution.

Next, Giorgia Raisi and Nicole Borsetti narrated the story of Gina Finzi Schönheit (Deportee no. 49547), born on August 31st, 1901. Wife of Carlo Schönheit and mother of Franco, she was arrested in Ferrara and sent first to the Fossoli camp (Modena) and later to Ravensbrück, managing to survive the genocide. They also showed the class photographs of the concentration camps where she had been deported, and finally mentioned the book “Uno su mille. Cinque famiglie ebraiche durante il fascismo” (One in a Thousand: Five Jewish Families During Fascism) written by Alexander Stille in 1992, which recounts Gina Finzi’s story and that of her family.

The class showed lively participation and deep attention throughout the presentations, contributing thoughtful comments and observations, turning the meeting into a moment of genuine collective reflection and curiosity.
